The SACU are committed to growing motorcycle sport in Scotland. As such, we conduct school outreach projects in a number of local authorities.

STEM Schools Programme

As the national governing body for motorcycle sport in Scotland, the Scottish Auto Cycle Union (SACU) is committed to developing the sport through innovative educational outreach. Our Motorcycle Sport STEM Programme introduces young people aged 5–18 to the dynamic world of motorcycle sport through engaging, hands-on learning aligned with the Scottish school programme, “Curriculum for Excellence” (CfE).

This unique programme blends Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with key aspects of health and wellbeing, social studies, digital literacy, and citizenship, providing an integrated approach that encourages young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors.

The SACU collaborates closely with schools to design tailored programmes that meet the specific needs and interests of their students. These programmes vary in length and depth, and cover a wide range of engaging topics, including:

  • An Introduction to Motorcycle Sport and STEM
  • Health and Wellbeing; including nutrition for performance, coping strategies, and building physical and emotional resilience.
  • Mathematics in a Real-World Context; focusing on calculations used in endurance riding such as time, speed, distance, and fuel planning.
  • Science and Social Studies; exploring areas such as energy use and sustainability, biodiversity and terrain, forces and motion, and the social impact of motorsport.
  • Map Reading and Navigation; with hands-on route planning and spatial awareness activities.
  • Technologies and Engineering; from GPS and digital tracking to communication systems and innovative engineering in support of endurance racing
  • First Aid, Officials Training, and Coaching; including CPR, marshalling, and basic coaching qualifications.
  • Community Safety and Citizenship; featuring sessions on responsible riding, the dangers of anti-social behaviour, and presentations from organisations like Police Scotland

Educational Impact

This cross-curricular programme is designed to support Curriculum for Excellence outcomes across multiple learning levels and abilities. It helps young people:

  • Develop key STEM skills with real-world application.
  • Improve physical and mental health awareness.
  • Gain insight into careers in sport, engineering, healthcare, and technology.
  • Understand community and environmental responsibility.

With structured challenges, activities, and hands-on experiences, the programme inspires curiosity, teamwork, critical thinking, and resilience—key qualities for success in school and life.
